FHIR, HL7, and VPN

Health Level Seven (HL7) is a set of international standards for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information. HL7 standards support clinical practice and the management, delivery, and evaluation of health services.

Similarly, Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is a standard describing data formats and elements (known as "resources") and an application programming interface (API) for exchanging electronic health records (EHR).

Carium supports integration with customer EMRs using either FHIR or HL7.

With an integration in place, Carium can send and receive data from the customer's EMR. This data can include patient information, clinical notes, lab results, and more. Events in Carium can trigger actions in the EMR, and vice versa.

Network Connections

Carium offers several methods to establish network connections between Carium and customer systems.

Allowlisted Addresses and TLS

The simplest way to connect Carium to a customer system is to allowlist Carium's dedicated IP addresses. Carium provides a set of stable, redundant IP addresses that can be allowlisted in the customer's firewall. This, in conjunction with a pre-shared username and password, allows Carium to connect to the customer system.

Carium uses Transport Layer Security (TLS) to encrypt data in transit between Carium and the customer system.

VPN

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a secure way to connect two points on the internet. VPN connections are encrypted and secure while traversing the public internet.

Carium can establish a VPN connection to the customer's network and communicate with the customer system over this secure connection.

Carium uses AWS Site-to-Site VPN, which supports IPsec IKEv2 IPv4 VPN connections. Carium will provide the customer with the necessary configuration information to establish the VPN connection.
